How we work

We are a mobile locksmith. We come to you.

The call

A lock problem in Trappe usually reaches us after a key starts hanging up in a cylinder, a rim exit device will not latch cleanly, or a master key stops turning a door the way it did before. The caller has often already checked the obvious: the key is the right one, the lock is not blocked, the door is not rubbing at the edge. We listen for the hardware type and the symptom, then set up the service for that specific lock work in Trappe.

What we check first

Before we touch anything, we look at the lock body, the cylinder, the keyway, and the exit hardware around it. That tells us whether the issue is in the cylinder, the keyed portion of a mortise lock, or the latch and trim tied to the door set. We also check how the key enters and where the binding starts, because that decides whether we work on the cylinder, reset the master key setup, or replace worn parts in place.

The work itself

At the door, we open the lock and work on the hardware directly. On a bored cylindrical lock, that can mean changing the cylinder and setting the keying to fit the existing hardware. On a mortise or rim lock, we may remove the cylinder, service the key side, or adjust the exit hardware so the latch and trim move together. In Trappe, that work stays on the lock set itself, not on the door around it.

What changes afterwards

When the work is finished, the lock has a new cylinder or a reset keyed section, and the original body remains in place. If the master key layout was part of the job, the changed cylinder now matches that arrangement, while the worn key side no longer carries the same binding points. On exit hardware, the latch and trim are set to move with less drag. The lock and key now meet at the parts that were changed, adjusted, or reset.

Worth knowing

On an older storefront, the same sticking cylinder may show up in a mortise case with a loose trim ring, a worn tailpiece, and screws that no longer hold the escutcheon tight. The key may turn partway, then drag as the plug and case no longer sit true. On a newer door, that trouble is more likely to be in a bored cylindrical lock where the latch, spindle, or cylinder body is out of line. We open the lock, check the cylinder fit, reset the hardware, and replace the worn parts that are causing the bind.

Master key trouble also looks different by building age. In an older office, the issue may come from a long-used mortise cylinder, a sagging ring of keyways, or a worn control key that no longer turns the master key system cleanly from one door to the next. In a newer property, the problem is often simpler: a changed suite lock, a mismatched cylinder, or an exit device keyed into a different set than the rest of the doors in Trappe. We open the lock, verify which cylinder belongs there, and reset the keying at the lock.

Exit hardware shows the contrast clearly. On an older building, the panic device may have a tired latch bolt, bent trim, or a dogging part that no longer holds square with the rim cylinder. On a newer door, the same complaint can come from a loose pushpad, a misfit trim assembly, or a cylinder that no longer matches the rest of the opening. We open the hardware, check the cylinder and latch work together, swap worn parts, and set the exit device back into the door and stop at the latch.

Questions

My office storeroom rim lock sticks after lunch; can you rekey it so the old key stops working?

Yes. We can rekey a rim lock on a business door so the old key no longer works that cylinder. We remove the cylinder, reset it for a new key, and check the key operation before we leave it at the door.

The rear exit mortise lock on our shop door feels loose and the thumbturn is slipping; what gets replaced?

We replace the worn parts that are causing the play, and we can change the cylinder if that is where the wear is. We look at the lock body, trim, and hardware together so the exit hardware matches the door and the key use stays consistent.

I need a master key for three tenant doors at my Trappe property; how do you set that up?

We build the keying around those doors and cylinders so one master key opens the group while each door keeps its own key. We plan the key system around the locks in place, then test the new keying at each cylinder and the master.

When you were changing the rear office cylinder, why did you ask for our master key before you finished?

Because we needed to match the new cylinder to the master key setup already in place. We check the keying before we swap parts, so the lock opens to the right key after the work. If the keying needs to be adjusted, we handle that while the cylinder is still out, not after it is back in the door.

While you worked on our exit bar, why did you keep checking the latch at the storeroom door?

Because the bar and the latch have to line up together for the door to open and close cleanly. We check the movement, the latch catch, and the way the hardware sits in the door before we leave it set. If the exit hardware is sticking or dragging, we correct the fit as part of the work on the door
